Meta Horizon Worlds

About

Meta’s Horizon Worlds is an online social VR experience that enables people to create and share worlds with one another. Released in 2019, I was a major contributor to the UI from before release.

I started as a UI Artist and contributed visual elements from 3D assets to environmental decor in several of the first-party games and experiences. I eventually transferred to the Product team and handled the overall design philosophies behind Horizon’s UI system.

Roles

  • UI Art

  • Product Design

  • Game Design

  • Visual Design

  • Prototyping

  • Storyboarding

Bespoke First-Party Worlds

In order to populate the early Horizon Worlds catalogue, I, along with various game development veterans, built numerous high-quality experiences using the Horizon’s world-building tools—directly in VR.

UI Design Language

I organized and managed the Horizon UI Design language, leading office hours and ensuring all product designers used the Figma components in a consistent manner.

New User Experience

I helped design various versions of an onboarding experience to swiftly teach new VR users fundamentals of navigation, creation, and more.

Iconography

I helped to build the Horizon icon system, converting hundreds of Facebook icons into a version that was more readable in VR, as well as creating new icons as use cases arise.

Personal UI

The personal UI is essential for the user experience on Horizon. I led the charge to update and flesh out the existing UI to the one we see today.

Homepage

I led the design of the Horizon webpage that brought VR users from responsive 2D platforms such as mobile, tablet, and PC.

First-Party Worlds

These are games created within Horizon's own in-VR game engine. I enjoyed using the Horizon world builder tool because it challenged me by restricting creation to basic primitives and enabling real-time, synchronous building.
